Remo Inc. is a global leader in the percussion industry, best known as the world’s largest manufacturer and developer of synthetic drumheads.

The company was founded in 1957 by drummer Remo Belli in California. Belli revolutionized the drum world by pioneering the use of Mylar, a durable, weather-resistant polyester film, to create the first commercially successful synthetic drumheads, marketed under the name « WeatherKing ». This innovation solved the major problem of traditional calfskin heads, which were highly susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity.

Key Areas and Products

Remo’s product line and company philosophy span several major areas:

  • Drumheads (The Core Business): Remo produces a vast range of drumheads for drum kits, marching drums, and orchestral percussion. Iconic series that cater to every genre and sound preference include:
    • Ambassador: The standard, single-ply head known for its open, bright, and resonant sound. The Coated Ambassador is arguably the most popular snare head in the world.
    • Emperor: A double-ply head offering increased durability, a warmer tone, and better projection, popular among rock drummers.
    • Pinstripe: A double-ply head with an integrated damping ring for a more controlled, « fat » sound with quick decay.
    • Powerstroke: Heads featuring built-in inlay rings (like the Powerstroke P3 for bass drums) to focus the sound and reduce overtones.
  • World Percussion & Drums: The company has expanded beyond drum kits to manufacture a wide variety of complete percussion instruments, including djembes, congas, bongos, tubanos, rototoms, and more, often featuring their proprietary synthetic drumhead technology for durability and sound consistency.
  • Wellness and Education: Remo has a strong commitment to promoting drumming for educational, recreational, and therapeutic purposes. They develop instruments and programs specifically for use in classrooms, drum circles, and even for medical applications.
